ArtenSUITE is an Integrated Custom Information System. A suite of modules for running your business. It is also a platform, or Application Development Framework for creating mission critical, 5x9 reliable software modules. ArtenSUITE generally refers to the product that will be sold to our customers, while AADF refers to the ArtenSUITE Application Development Framework that is used to develop the modules and may also be made available to other developers.

The SME however has the choice of many seperate software packages to handle their business. The reason is flexibility, integration, support and innovative features. The downside to having custom software written is the cost, the length of time it takes, variable quality and often the inability to meet the needs of the customer. If you have Apple computers within your organisation, forget it.

ArtenSUITE provides an alternative. The AADF is cross platform (Windows (all current versions) and Macintosh OSX) software that includes a complete environment for developing business applications against the worlds leading database, Oracle10g, with PostgreSQL support coming soon.

The decision to go cross platform is key, as is the choice of Oracle or PostgreSQL as the database backend. The recent rapid growth of sales for Apple computers and the release of OracleXE, enterprise features for low cost, means that ArtenSUITE has advantages over the competition straight away.

AADF allows software modules to be written and integrated in a very intuitive manner and in quicker time than ever before. By providing an engineered, designed, tested and constantly refined environment in which the modules can operate.

The AADF is multi groups of companies, multi company, multi currency, multi user and multi lingual.

Although the database structure for AADF is highly efficient and normalised, the interface presented to the user of a reporting tool is simple and logical, accomplished through the use of database views. AADF is open, the data can be queried by any of the SQL tools available that support Oracle, ODBC or JDBC, ie: almost all.

AADF is designed to support Business Intelligence and Warehousing through the use of pre-calculated materialised views and aggregate sets. Advanced graphing facilities are also a part of AADF.

ArtenSUITE can be purchased and installed in-house on a server as per any standard client / server software application. The users use the database via the local area network. This is standard stuff, what is not standard though is the fact that Arten Science or its consultants will provide all the support for the system, negating the need for any real IT expertise inhouse.

In addition to this however ArtenSUITE has been written to support ‘hosted’ environments.

In the hosted scenario Arten Science will install the ArtenSUITE database on a Windows 2003 Server or Linux operating system which is itself running virtualised on a server using proven VMWare technology. The customer will access their database over the internet. All database support and backups will be done by Arten Science.

The idea of hosted services is not new, but only recently are they starting to become a reality as broadband access to the internet becomes ubiquitous. Some people believe the future is running applications within the Web Browser. I don’t believe this is the right way forward for enterprise applications that involve a lot of data entry and reporting. Users like the ‘rich client’ experience and expect their applications to look good and respond quickly.

Where the ‘cloud’ (the internet) comes into play though is in the transfer of information. Keep your rich client applications on the desktop but let someone else take care of the data. Like electricity, gas or water, your data will be supplied as a utility in the future. After all, how often do you have to treat your own water supply or generate your own electricity ? Why should you have to have onsite technicians (IT staff) to keep your database running ?
