Another Note from a Customer
CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL
' ...
I purchased a Mac copy of R10Office yesterday for my own use. I am a professor and the University at which I teach resides in the sad environment of the hard copy world. I have been trying diligently to demonstrate that technology can be user-friendly, cost-effective, and far more efficient than current practices. After just one day with your product, I am convinced that it may be the tool that could change the system. In order to demonstrate the possibilities, I would like to purchase a second copy of the software for use on my UK University computer. My goal is to set up and use the program, then share the results with others who could either purchase the systems interdepartmentally or personally'- An R10Office Customer

The R10Office suite consists of four totally seperate independent programs that also integrate together seamlessly. If you purchase the R10Office suite rather than the programs individually you can use the R10Office Launcher to run the programs. This may be more convenient than creating seperate aliases or shortcuts for each program.
The launcher is not yet available, but the current development version looks like this on the Mac:

New Product Release: ooSooM
Today I released my latest product: ooSooM.
ooSooM is a Todo Management and Secure Digital Filing System for Macintosh OSX and Microsoft Windows.
The idea behind ooSooM is simple. To get on with the job in hand you need to get thoughts of what needs doing and what needs remembering out of your head and safely and securely logged, in a way that means you can find them later when needed. Bits of paper are so yesterday ![]()
ooSooM does not attempt to force a predetermined 'methodology' on you, rather it's very free format and open allowing you to use it however you like, but with enough structure to ensure that once logged, information can retrieved easily and readily.
ooSooM is Windows 7 and OSX Snow Leopard compatible.
ooSooM is supplied FREE OF CHARGE for PERSONAL USE.
One of the unique features of ooSooM is that if you have an R10Cipher license then Todo or Vault items within ooSooM can be Encrypted / Decrypted on an individual basis. This allows you to use ooSooM to store confidential information such as Passwords, Serial Numbers, Credit Card Numbers, Bank Details Etc.
Another unique feature of ooSooM is that it integrates directly with ContaX, our CRM package. This means that Todo items and Vault items can be linked to particular Customers, Suppliers or Contacts. This link can be seen both from within ooSooM and within ContaX.
You can see some pictures of ooSooM below, and you can view the Getting Started Guide here.

Why R10Cipher ? Part 9/10
R10Cipher is a fantastic cross platform tool which has given us the peace of mind that our patient sensitive research data can be transmitted electronically in a secure manner on site or with collaborators around the world. The ability to encrypt and attach files to emails or simply encrypt the email text between Apple Macs and Windows PCs without the need for complicated software installations means that our users are happy to use this great bit of software. The developer’s proactive approach to their software development requesting and rapidly incorporating users feedback has turned a good encryption tool into and excellent one.
Paul McGrath, Computer Manager, Cancer Research UK Clinical Centre
My Sony USB Microvault is so much easier than lugging my laptop through airport security, yet again. The nightmare of the lost or stolen USB stick is only too real, with the Staff Salary Reviews and the Acquisition Financials modeled in embarrassing detail. I use R10Cipher for Mac as a simple and reliable way of exchanging financial models and private placement memorandums across platforms as well as for secure storage on my USB sticks and portable hard drives. Simple, reliable and easy to use.
Karl Mattingly, Partner, slowCapital
R10Cipher is simple, easy to use and powerful. It is the best encryption program for the Mac we have found.
Paul, OnTravel.Com
R10Cipher has been an excellent product for ensuring the safe and secure transmission of files in a cross platform environment. As an independent Strategy Consultant using Apple Mac, but with a client base using mostly PC platforms, I need to find a way to easily send sensitive market and financial data to clients with no hassle for my clients. R10Cipher does the job simply, easily, and with no problems at all, and causes no difficulties with clients firewalls. Enough said!... great product.

For NetFoos I am lucky enough to travel around the USA and parts of Europe to bring live streaming foosball tournaments to the foosball community. For the live streaming there is a lot of information needed to keep the server running and secure. Now, while on the road with R10Cipher, receiving this information from the home office is much easier as we can simply encrypt and email it while feeling confident that our data remains private. Although we are constantly finding new uses for the software, this one capability has made R10Cipher a great investment for us.
Mark Winker, NetFoos.com
If you need to make company or private info available on a need to know basis, them R10Cipher is the tool for you. There are other encryption packages but I haven't found an easier to use cross platform software than this one.

Why R10Cipher ? Part 8/10
Data Security and Privacy are an ideal, a holy grail that we as citizens in the 21st century are striving for. What was once considered a right, is now considered difficult and virtually unattainable.
Convenience and Security are generally seen as being divided by a large gap. Veer to the left of that gap and we have greater Convenience, at the expense of Security. Veer to the right and we have greater Security, at the expense of Convenience.
I don’t think it has to be that way. R10Cipher is designed to make security of email, text and documents convenient and easy to use without compromising on security.
Additionally I am using the R10Cipher engine in a number of my products to give inbuilt encryption by default, there is no reason that the data stored within your CRM System or your Todo Manager should be stored as clear text, built in encryption in all kinds of products is the way forward.
I am also working with other companies who are using the R10Cipher encryption libraries to build encryption into their own products from the start.
Choosing R10Cipher should not stop you using other complimentary encryption systems. Full disk encryption products such as TrueCrypt add to your overall security and as such work well with R10Cipher. Security is better viewed as a layered approach, there is no silver bullet or one stop shop.
I believe that generally speaking security is looked upon by the man in the street as too complicated and too expensive and as such often gets ignored.
With R10Cipher I hope to change peoples minds and therefore help protect their privacy.

Why R10Cipher ? Part 7/10
One of the problems that I discovered while testing the PCD Initiative was the problem of Key Management. In other words, for security purposes, I as an IFA for example, should use a different Shared Secret for each client but how do I remember each of those and who they belong to ? The answer came with version 3 of R10Cipher and the inbuilt Key Management capability.
R10Cipher Version 3 features an encrypted database of contact names and their email addresses. Stored against each of these individual records is also their Shared Secret. All of this information can be recalled and used by entering a single master password. I need only my master password to communicate securely with any of my contacts, using their own individual Shared Secrets.
There is also the option of setting a secondary password called a ‘Usage Password’. This password allows an individual, maybe a member of staff, to send and receive encrypted communications with the client without ever seeing or having the ability to change that clients Shared Secret.
I believe this method of communicating between large groups of people securely has simplicity and security advantages to the Public Key methods available, whether centralised using a Certificate Authority or decentralised ‘Web of Trust’ PGP type methods.
Another advantage of R10Cipher in this scenario is that you have the control, you are not relying on a third party, or a web service to handle the encryption.
With R10Cipher it is all done locally.

Why R10Cipher ? Part 6/10
The reason I created the Protect Client Data Initiative (www.protectclientdata.co.uk) was because I believe that we can get more people to use encryption by starting with the organisations that deal with the consumers in a professional capacity, Independent Financial Advisors, Accountants, Realtors and other professionals.
If we can convince these organisations to use R10Cipher to encrypt their communication between themselves and their clients then the benefits are felt far and wide.
The PCD Initiative works by selling a personalised copy of R10Cipher to a professional organisation. They then have the right to give this software to all of their clients free of charge, or if they wish they can charge a fee. Communication between this organisation and their clients is then done using R10Cipher to ensure the privacy of the communication.
Using the example of an IFA, the benefits for them are threefold:
They are seen to be taking their clients privacy seriously, their competitors may not be
Any incidents of identity theft cannot be levelled at the IFA
They fulfil the requirements of their governing body for ‘treating customers fairly’
In the UK The Data Protection Act 1998 regulates how organisations should handle personal data that relates to a living individual who can be identified. Organisations processing personal data must do so in accordance with eight core principles. Principle 7: Technical and organisational measures should be taken to prevent unauthorised and unlawful processing, loss or damage to personal data. Encryption is not specifically mentioned, but is one of the best ways of complying with Principle 7.
With R10Cipher compliance is easy, simple and inexpensive.

Why R10Cipher ? Part 5/10
Another area in which R10Cipher can be used successfully is when communication needs to be made between individuals using technologies that are publicly readable. An example would be a blog being written by a world traveller in which he updates his audience daily as to his location and his adventures.
Tagged on the end of a blog post could be an encrypted message that can be decoded only by his wife in which he tells her how much he misses her and can she send him some toilet roll as this item appears to be in short supply in Outer Mongolia.
R10Cipher is ideal for this purpose.

Why R10Cipher ? Part 4/10
Some encryption solutions available are in my opinion potentially dangerous, as they give the illusion of security while in the real world being subject to being compromised all too easily. There are a number of common ‘server based’ or ‘black box’ type email encryption systems. These systems encrypt the email whilst in transit.
This is fine as far as it goes, however what about if the email gets sent to the wrong person accidentally ? or if it then gets forwarded accidentally by the recipient ? What about if the recipient’s computer is insecure and her email inbox is reviewed by someone when she is out of the office ?
In my opinion for an email to be considered secure it should be encrypted in such a way that the only people who can view the contents are the sender and the intended recipient(s).
R10Cipher is the obvious choice.

Why R10Cipher ? Part 3/10
It seems that despite the publicity given to security, encryption and identity theft, very few people actually take these threats seriously. Our own government and Civil Service have time and time again been caught out and been exposed as not taking security, our security, even national security, seriously.
This is, I sincerely hope, down to individuals being confused about or choosing to ignore security policies and not down to the fact that these organisations don’t have any security policies in place.
The reason, I believe, that security is often ignored is because it is perceived as too complicated for the average person. In a lot of cases it is. Security and Encryption are, and need to be, Complex - but Not Complicated.
If an encryption product could be copied onto your computer, whether it be running Windows, Mac or Linux, if this product could be run from a USB drive or a CD-ROM, if this product was only 32Mb in size and was fast and easy to use requiring no installation, or runtimes, would people be more comfortable using it ?
If you could communicate using this encryption product and the recipient if not already possessing the product, could download it in seconds and use it to decrypt the message without any payment or registration, would people use it ?
If you could encrypt a bunch of files just by dragging and dropping them into R10Cipher, could it be any easier ?
If an individual receiving an encrypted document could double click the encrypted document, enter their Shared Secret and have the encrypted document be decrypted and automatically saved to their Desktop under it’s original file name, isn’t that easy and straightforward enough ?
An American school teacher recently purchased R10Cipher and now uses it to send messages to the parents of her students. As the ‘decrypt only’ version of R10Cipher is free of charge, this was done at no cost to the parents and only $15 to the teacher. Price along with flexible and fair licensing are additional ways in which R10Cipher triumphs over it’s competitors.
R10Cipher can do all the above, and more.

Why R10Cipher ? Part 2/10
R10Cipher is a simple and easy way to safely encrypt your email, text and document files. It is like your documents and email are escorted by a SWAT Team rather than written on a postcard.
R10Cipher offers secure, peer to peer end to end encryption using up to 384 Bit Blowfish encryption.
The encryption technology used by R10Cipher was developed in the UK. Blowfish is a keyed symmetric block cipher which was invented by ‘Security Guru’ and renowned author, Bruce Schneier, Chief Security Technical Officer at British Telecom, in 1993. It provides excellent encryption and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Blowfish is free of patents, and back doors, and Bruce has placed Blowfish in the public domain.
Blowfish was chosen over AES for R10Cipher due to the fact that rightly or wrongly there is some suspicion in certain circles, specifically in the USA, that AES is compromised and that their government may have a back-door into AES. The reality of that point of view is irrelevant as it’s the beliefs of the potential customer that matters.

Why R10Cipher ? Part 1/10
This series of posts discusses why you should use R10Cipher to ensure your communications are kept private and confidential.
In this document there is very little discussion of the technology. There is a very good reason for this.
Technology is the easy part of security, the real issue that needs addressing is how to make the technology easy and simple enough so that it is used.
Security and encryption are as much about people and processes as technology. What good is security technology if people cannot or will not use it.
R10Cipher was designed from the ground up to be useable by ordinary people. The design for versions 2 and 3 was based almost totally on feedback from existing and potential future customers.

R10Cipher 3 - Key Retrieval
One of the key features of Version 3 is Key Management. Taken from the new manual is the following post.
Key Retrieval
Scenario 1: Encrypting or Decrypting Text or a File from within R10Cipher
In these circumstances instead of having to remember and enter the Shared Secret for the contact you can instead select the Keys Tab and input the Master or Usage Password for the appropriate contact. Then choose the contact from the list. You can search for the contact and filter the list using the search box on the bottom left of the screen.
Select the contact in the list. If you have entered the correct Password the indicator will change from red to Green and the Shared Secret fields will be populated.

You can now encrypt text or files without having to enter the Shared Secret.
Another Advantage of retrieving the Shared Secret from the Key Management Database is that if you are sending an encrypted email, R10Cipher will know the email address and fill in the email header appropriately.
So instead of having to remember lots of Shared Secrets and Email Addresses, you only, using the Key Management Database, have to remember a minimum of one Password.
Scenario 2: Double Clicking an Encrypted File to Decrypt It
When double clicking an encrypted file you now see the following screen:

In these circumstances instead of having to remember and enter the Shared Secret for the contact you can instead input the Master or Usage Password for the appropriate contact.
You can search for the contact and filter the list using the search box on the bottom left of the screen.
Select the contact in the list. If you have entered the correct Password the indicator will change from red to Green and the Shared Secret fields will be populated.
Click Continue to decrypt your file.

R10Cipher 3 - Key Creation and Administration
One of the key features of Version 3 is Key Management. Taken from the new manual is the following post.
Key Creation and Administration
The creation of keys is done by selecting the following Menu Option:
Key Management
Key Creation and Administration
You will see the following screen (Mac OSX version shown):

This is where you setup your clients/contacts and your/their Shared Secrets. In addition, for each client you setup you can assign two passwords, a Master password and a Usage Password. For an explanation of the two passwords see the Key Management Introduction section.
To Insert a contact, just start typing and fill in the five information fields, from Name to Usage Password. When complete press Save, and Save again to confirm.
To Edit a contact, select the contact from the list on the left hand side of the screen. You will see the Name and Email Address but the Shared Secret and the Passwords are encrypted and not readable. To view this data and edit it you need to input the Master Password for this contact into the Decode Password area of the screen and press the Decode button. You can then edit the information and save it using the Save button.
To Delete a contact, select the contact from the list on the left hand side of the screen. You will need to input the Master Password for this contact into the Decode Password area of the screen and press the Decode button. You can then press the Delete button to erase the record.
Note: Deleted records are gone and cannot be retrieved.
If you intend entering a number of clients or contacts you may already have them stored in a database or spreadsheet somewhere. If that is the case then you should Import the records which will save you time and increase information accuracy.
Note: You will need to edit each record later to apply the Shared Secret and Password(s).
To Import records you have three choices which can be selected using the ‘radio’ buttons on the bottom left of the window. When you have selected the type of import you require press the Import button. The three choices are:
Tab - Tab Delimited
This is the Tab Import Window. The fields required are Name and Email Address. Select the import file using the Select File button. Select the records you would like to import, and save them to the Key Management database using the Save Selected button.

ContaX - ContaX CRM Import
This is the ContaX (http://www.r10contax.com) Import Window. You point R10Cipher at your ContaX database, using the Select DB button, and this pulls data into the import window, allows you to sort by Type and then import the selected records using the Save Selected button.

Address Book - Apple Only
This is the Apple Address Book Import Window. Select the records to import and save them to R10Cipher using the Save Selected button.

R10Cipher Key Management, Shared Secrets and Passwords
One of the key features of Version 3 is Key Management. Taken from the new manual is the following post.
An Explanation and Recommended Use of Shared Secrets and Passwords
Shared Secret
This is the code or phrase that is used to secure a communication between yourself and a particular third party, ie: your client or contact.
Master Password
This is the password that only you should know. It safe guards your Key Management Database records. You could use a different Master Password for each record if you preferred or use a different one for each type of contact, or use the same one for each record. It’s entirely up to you, but bear in mind that you have to remember this one ...
Usage Password
Only needed if another individual may be using your R10Cipher to communicate with your contacts. They can retrieve the Shared Secrets for use but cannot see them or change them.
It is recommended that for each client/contact you assign a different Shared Secret. Make it at least 8 characters, 16 or more is ideal, it doesn’t have to be particularly memorable as the Key Management makes it easy for this to be retrieved when needed.
You should secure your Key Management Database and the Shared Secrets using a Master Password. This Master Password should be more memorable as this is the what you will have to enter in order to edit, delete or retrieve the Shared Secrets. I recommend you base this password on a something familiar, for example the first letter of the words of the first two lines of your favourite song. Mix this using upper and lowercase and substitute numbers where possible.
Note: The reason for having a password secure the Shared Secrets is that the Shared Secret is used to encrypt the communication, this communication will be ‘in the wild’ when transferred over the internet between email or web servers, hence it needs to be unique and strong. Your Key Management Database however is not exposed to the outside world so a small amount of passwords or a single password should be sufficient to encrypt and control access to the records in the Key Management Database.

R10Cipher Key Management Introduction
One of the key features of Version 3 is Key Management. Taken from the new manual is the following post.
An Introduction to Key Management
Key Management is an extremely useful and important part of encryption, yet is often sadly neglected by the developers of encryption software.
In this document the term ‘Key’ relates to the database record for an individual which contains the following information:
Name
Email Address
Shared Secret
Master Password
Usage Password
If you have several contacts who you communicate with using encryption, how do you keep track of, remember and retrieve the individual Shared Secrets ? The Key Management database makes this possible.
Note: Storing information of this nature in a database would under normal circumstances be a security risk in itself, R10Cipher however stores this information in an Encrypted format using 384 Bit encryption and a 56 Character Secret.
By inputting (or importing) your contacts into the Key Management Database you can retrieve their Shared Secrets and Email Addresses when you need them, quickly and easily.
There are two password fields in the Key Management Database Record. If there is only one person using your Key Management Database then you need only bother with the Master Password, if someone else is allowed to use your Key Management database then they will be given the ‘Usage Password’ which will allow them to Encode and Decode communications from the contact, but not change any details, including the Shared Secret.

Zero Effort Corporate Licensing
Zero Effort Corporate Licensing enables each desktop to be easily licensed without requiring any typing or copy / pasting from the user.
From the R10Cipher Manual:
R10Cipher features the ability to license the program for the user just by deploying a file to them, maybe via email, which they they drag into their R10Cipher folder. If R10Cipher is currently running as a Trial Version the file will be read next time the program is started and the program automatically licensed.
The file must be named as follows:
R10Cipher_License.ini
and the contents must be in plain text format and read as follows:
In a multi desktop environment Zero Effort Licensing saves time and effort and provides a painless way to license your Arten Science product.
If purchasing a corporate version of R10Cipher you can request that we send you the license file you need, instead of just the serial number and user name that we usually provide.

What Is It With Some People ??
Last year a developer named Alex Restpero released a Custom Editfield Control for REALbasic. An excellent piece of programming and a very sophisticated and useful control. He received feedback such as ‘Excellent work, just excellent!!! And they said it couldnt be done!’ and ‘Very well done Alex!’. Rightly so - it is an excellent tool.
Fast forward to late last month when I released my REALbasic Starter Kit with a Syntax highlighter module built in. A fellow developer with who I have had no previous contact decided to review the product on a public site, give it a 1 star rating and include the following comments (among others):
‘There is a strong suspicion in the REALbasic community that he is just repacking code that others have given away for free. This suspicion stems in part from the fact that his other product REALbasic Syntax Highlighter Module seems to be a repackaged version of Alex Resrepo's SyntaxHighlightEditField which is free ‘
As a professional developer who makes his living writing software and always behaves in an ethical manner - I had to respond to this.
Firstly I asked Alex Restpero, the author of the software I was supposed to have copied, to look at my code and make a statement as to whether or not I had in fact stolen his code. Alex, very kindly provided this reply to this midguided and insecure individual with the following comment:
‘Markus, I just reviewed the syntax highlighting code, and I can tell you it's definitely not based on mine. Steve's code is keyword-based, while mine is regex-rule based.’
So my point is proven - I did not ‘repackage’ anybody’s code it was written from scratch by me and is sold perfectly legitimately as part of my REALbasic Starter Kit. The problem for me is that this individual’s nasty and ill informed words are still there to continuously annoy me ...
I have emailed the individual twice, with no response, I have called him out in the REALBasic Mailing List, with no response - all I would like is for him to get the review removed and apologise for his ‘misunderstanding’. We can then have a virtual hug and get on with our lives.
If I ever hear from this individual I will update this post, but I don’t hold out much hope, maybe he will prove me wrong, I hope so.

REALbasic Starter Kit
The REALbasic Starter Kit can be downloaded from here:
http://www.rbtools.net
The RB Starter Kit executable demonstrates and documents a module of predefined functions that will mainly be of use to new and intermediate REALbasic Developers.
The RB Starter Kit contains an executable for Macintosh and Windows.
Purchase of the Starter Kit gives you the source code for the examples application. The module that performs the functions remains encrypted but can be used in any of your projects without restriction.
As well as the module that can be used within your own projects, the source code for the examples application can be used to learn how to do things such as automatically creating a local SQLite database to store the locations and sizes of all the windows in your application, how to populate and react to events on a Listbox Control, use of Toolbars, Menus Etc.
RBStarterKit1 also includes the Syntax Highlighter Module.
The Syntax Highlighter Module operates against any EditField in your REALbasic Application. As you type, your words are matched against a text file containing keywords, words that you wish to have highlighted in some way on your EditField, an example would be a SQL Query or a Language Editor.
Whatever you type in the EditField is highlighted if contained within your Keywords File. This text file can be easily created and then edited to include or exclude additional keywords.
The Syntax Highlighter is supplied as an Encrypted RB Module which you include in your own applications.

Surveillance for Your Mac
Version 1.1.0 of MonitorMyMac introduces the capability for MMM to create HTML files which contain a link to the latest captured images.
Two files are created (assuming you have set the Preferences to capture both Screen and Webcam), the files are named:
mmm_latest_webcam.html
and
mmm_latest_screenshot.html
These files are created and stored locally with your images as well as being automatically uploaded to your FTP site (if you are using the FTP capability).
In practical terms what this gives you is the capability to bookmark these files and view the latest webcam or screen captures from iPhone, Windows Mobile Device, Netbook, Browser or any other device that can display webpages and has access to your FTP site over the internet.
This is much easier and quicker than manually looking at the directory listings to establish the latest images. Although you can of course still do this should you wish to.

R10BatchMail is a simple to use Bulk Email Sending program for Macintosh OSX.
R10BatchMail is useful for sending a newletter, informing of change of address, marketing or any one of a thousand other reasons for contacting your customers, prospects or suppliers.

Syntax Highlighter Module Released for REALbasic Developers
Download the Example Application to test the Syntax Highlighter with the supplied SQL Keywords file or alternatively your own Keywords file.
There are no royalty fees involved.
The encrypted module and the unencrypted example application will be sent to you via email following purchase via Paypal from our website at http://www.rbtools.net. This encrypted module can be used in any of your projects without limitation or credit.
To use the Module within your own application, follow these simple instructions:
1. Create your text file of Keywords
2. Load the Keywords file (possibly at program startup) with the following code:
mSyntaxControl.LoadKeywordsFromFile(FILENAME)
3. Place the following code in the EditField TextChange Event:
mSyntaxControl.ChangeText(me,True,True,True,&c0000FF)
The Parameters are: (EditField, Capitals as Boolean, Bold as Boolean, Colour as Boolean, Colour Value)
Words within single or double quotes are not affected and neither are words that are part of another word.
A screenshot of the example program is shown below:

Updates to this module will be made over time as feedback comes in and as it is used in one of my own products I will no doubt be adding enhancements over the next few weeks / months.

‘R10Clean goes from strength to strength.
If you are engaged in audit or preliminary research of medical, biological, psychological, social, nursing or paramedical data, especially with yes, no, may-be type responses (and other types of nominal data), do yourself a favour and try this software.
It is simple but very powerful.
Before your tear your hair out on excel, SPSS and the like, you may find that the analysis is much easier after using R10Clean.
The developer is very resonsive to user feedback.
The recent addition of count occurrances can eliminate at one stroke the need to struggle with VCount and CountIF (or similar) in Excel or to have to do this manually.’

Now that’s a *great* review. Cheers

R10Clean Beta 1.9.7 Available for Download
www.artenscience.com/autoupdate/latestversions/r10cleanbeta.zip
This is a considerable update. The new features since the last Beta are as follows:
Support has been added for several popular string encodings including:
- MacRoman
- UTF8
- UTF16
- MacCentralEurRoman
- Windows ANSI
- ASCII

New Task: Remove Punctuation from End of Column ? ! . ; : ,
New Task: Find Empty Strings
New Task: Pad Left / Align Right
New Task: Pad Right / Align Left
New Task: Pad Both / Align Centre
For string padding you can specify your preferred character within the Preferences. Usually you will be padding with a space character, I should imagine, but who knows ?
New Task: Count Occurences
This particular task was suggested by one of my early users, know only as VG! This task will count the occurences of a particular numeric or alphanumeric value within the selected rows / columns. I am told this is important in several areas of science and research.
Please let me have your feedback on this new version.

R10Clean Beta 1.9.55 Available for Download
www.artenscience.com/autoupdate/latestversions/r10cleanbeta.zip
This version has the following enhancements:
Progress Bar and Counter X of XXX when checking for duplicates.
The duplicate finding code is now multi threaded to allow the UI to function and update during these processes.
I intend to make each of the ‘tasks’ multi threaded with appropriate counters and progress bar before release of Version 2. The finding of duplicates works well - but is currently relatively slow when dealing with tens of thousands of rows. I will be looking at this also before the release of Version 2.
Version 2 will have an increase in price. Some of the new features I have in mind (and have not yet discussed publicly) push the product more towards a corporate purchase which means the price has to be increased in order to appear as a creditable product. This has the effect of increasing my revenue and also helping fund further development of the product. However all licensed users of Version 1 will get a free upgrade to Version 2 when it is released in a couple of weeks or so.
I will also be creating a new website for R10Clean, the domain name is setup and ready to roll

The only change in this version is the addition of ‘Zero Effort Corporate Licensing’. Effectively this allows you to create a text file with your license details embedded and distribute this around your corporation with the application. The text file will be read at program startup and the software automatically licensed on that computer.
For this to work the file must be named: R10Clean_License.ini and be placed in the R10Clean folder with the application.
The contents of the file must look like this, obviously using your own license details instead

Beta 1.9.3 can be downloaded here: www.artenscience.com/autoupdate/latestversions/r10cleanbeta.zip
So far the changes that have been made to this version over the current release are as follows:
08/02/09 Slight Alteration to the Licensing Window
08/02/09 Multiple Save Buttons replaced with Radio Buttons
10/02/09 The first Grid Column is now a Row Number
11/02/09 Show Duplicates Task Added
Version 2 will mainly be focusing on adding new tasks and functionality. So far the only additional task is the ‘Show Duplicates’ task. This has been asked for several times. Once you have executed this task, if you wish to delete the selected duplicates you can use the ‘Remove Selected Rows’ task. Feedback on this new feature is welcomed.

R10Cipher vs TrueCrypt
The goals of R10Cipher are as follows:
1. Provide a simple to use method of creating encrypted email messages.
2. Provide a simple to use method of encrypting and decrypting individual files and documents.
By focusing on the above two goals R10Cipher is designed specifically for use between two parties who are likely to be transferring private or sensitive information. R10Cipher is the complete ‘end to end’ encryption solution.
R10Cipher is not free, the price however is designed to be attractive given the advantages of R10Cipher over the alternatives. It has to be said that using some sort of encryption when passing sensitive information is now necessary and essential.
Initially this document was going to cover several alternatives, when it comes to Cross Platform alternatives however there is not a lot of choice and the only one of note is TrueCrypt.
By ‘Cross Platform’ what I mean is software that can be used on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Mac OSX and Linux. If you wish to communicate securely then you need a solution that will run on your operating system as well as the operating system used by your clients, you have no control over what their choice of operating system is.
TrueCrypt http://www.truecrypt.org
TrueCrypt is designed to create an encrypted ‘volume’ that can then be accessed from either your Windows or Macintosh computer, using the appropriate password, assuming you have TrueCrypt installed. As a method of creating and maintaining an encrypted volume of information TrueCrypt is excellent. It is however designed for an entirely different purpose to R10Cipher.
Think of the hard disk on your computer. Imagine another hard disk into which you can store information which is then automatically encrypted. Imagine being able to drag that hard disk onto a USB key and take it with you and load it onto another computer. That is effectively what TrueCrypt does.
Compare this to R10Cipher. R10Cipher allows you to encrypt and decrypt the contents of an email or text document. R10Cipher allows you to encrypt a single file that can then be sent over email or copied around the network. A very different proposition to TrueCrypt.
It’s also worth looking at ease of use. R10Cipher requires no installation. TrueCrypt needs a lengthy installation and setup. Who is going to support your clients through this installation ? If in doubt it is worth doing the exercise and seeing for yourself. As a solution to use between yourself and external clients, TrueCrypt cannot be recommended. It is just not designed for that purpose.
Of course as the author and designer of R10Cipher I am biased. Therefore I recommend you try both R10Cipher and TrueCrypt. R10Cipher can be downloaded for a free trial from this address:

Creating SQL Update Statements for Bulk Imports using DataClean
A simplified version of the spreadsheet looks like this:

Traditionally to import this type of data I would have created a small screen to import the data via a loop, or maybe I would have used a database utility and mapped the columns. This time I used dataclean to convert this information into a long series of SQL Update statements which where then simply run as a script.
The procedure I was followed was this:
- Open the spreadsheet using DataClean
- Select Column A, Select all the Rows
- Perform an Insert / Beginning of Column
- Type: update countries_table set shipcost =
- Select Column B
- Perform an Insert / Beginning of Column
- Type: , set max_wgt =
- ....... (Each Column)
- Select Column G
- Perform an Insert / Beginning of Column
- Type: WHERE country_code = ‘
- Perform an Insert / End of Column
- Type: ‘ ;
- Save the Document using a Space Character as the Custom Delimiter
- Run the Document as a SQL Script
update bas_cho_ccry set cry_1stvalue = 600 , cry_2ndvalue = 950 , cry_freevalue = 1300 where cry_code = 'AL' and cry_comp_fk_com = 61;
Very quick to do and very efficient. I love it

R10Cipher V2 Open Beta - Cross Platform Encryption for Text and Files
http://www.artenscience.com/autoupdate/latestversions/r10cipherv2_beta.zip
The main change in Version 2 is the ability to Encrypt a binary file, or virtually any type of file.
Version 1 concentrated on encrypting and decrypting text documents. With Version 2 you can input a Word or Excel Document which will then be encrypted and saved under the same name with an ‘r10Enc’ file extension.
When the document is decrypted it is written to disk using its original name, and is available to be viewed and manipulated in the normal manner.
When you realise that most passworded documents can be viewed very easily (including Excel) with tools downloaded from the internet then you can see that R10Cipher V2 is an essential utility to add to your software collection.
Version 2 will be priced higher than Version 1. Any customer of Version 1 will be able to upgrade to Version 2 by paying the difference in price.
The Beta for this version expires at the end of January. Beta testers who provide useful feedback will be entitle to purchase a personal license of R10Cipher at 50% off the retail price.

Other changes to Version 2 include a ‘Feedback list’ in the bottom right of the window, and Menu options are now provided to duplicate the functionality of the Toolbar buttons.

Eating My Own Dogfood, Using R10Cipher
To store passwords, serial numbers, code snippets etc. I use YoJimbo from Bare Bones Software. This is then syncronised to my other Mac’s via Mobile Me. So far so good. YoJimbo however does have some limitations, single user, no choice of backend database storage, no Windows version etc. All of these limitations will be overcome with my product Sicuro, which if customers wanting bespoke solutions will leave me alone for a bit (just kidding! I love all my customers
With the need to travel to Europe and my aversion to carrying any more than will fit in hand luggage, and also the fact that I sometimes visit customers on my motorcycle, I have needed a small and light laptop. Apple does not do a netbook unfortunately and the MacBook Air is still to big so I have recently obtained a Dell Mini 9. Which runs Windows XP. Which means that all my serial numbers, passwords, website logons etc. are not available to me when I travel.
This is where R10Cipher is really useful.
To start with I highlight all the items I want from YoJimbo and use the Export option. The problem here is that YoJimbo exports a new file for every entry, and I need just the one file. To address this I open the Terminal application and navigate to the directory containing my exported password files. I then type the following command:
cat * > newfilename.txt
Voila ! I now have a single file that contains all of my exported passwords in plain text.
I then launch R10Cipher and drag the contents of my text file into the ‘Clear Text’ area of R10Cipher. I type a ‘Shared Secret’ and click the Encrypt button. My passwords are now encrypted, protected by the key, or ‘Shared Secret’ that I just entered.
All that remains is for me to copy the encrypted file onto my Windows netbook and when I need the passwords I can use the Windows version of R10Cipher to open and Decrypt the file which allows me to view the contents. If I lose my netbook or it gets stolen - so what. At least my data is safe.
Note to UK Government agencies: YOU NEED R10CIPHER ![]()
