ContaX 1.5.5 Released
We released 1.5.5 of
ContaX today. This is probably the last release prior to the MySQL Multi-User version which is due soon (I said this last time, but I was mistaken
).
1.5.5 has the following small but useful update:
Attached Vault documents from ooSooM are now shown against the appropriate contact within ContaX and can be opened in their original application by double clicking them.
You can see this in the annotated screenshot below:
This is a small but useful feature that gives added value to the document management features of the ContaX CRM solution.

ContaX 1.5.2 Released
We released 1.5.2 of
ContaX today. This is probably the last release prior to the MySQL Multi-User version which is due soon.1.5.2 has the following updates:

The information below is repeated from an earlier post and answers some of the questions ContaX, the MySQL Edition:
We’ve been working hard on the Multi-User version of
ContaX CRM recently. ContaX CRM has been a great success, people generally seem to like the simple approach to CRM and the interaction with the other R10Office products such as ooSooM and R10BatchMail.However, the current version of ContaX works against
SQLite which is a Single User database making ContaX CRM more suitable for Individuals, or the Self Employed.A Multi-User version of ContaX CRM has always been on the cards but development has been accelerated due to the many requests from potential customers who desperately need an easy to use CRM package for their small business and they don’t want to spend the earth. In my opinion Mac users particularly have hardly any decent choices in this category of software.
There are three main areas that I am being regularly asked about concerning the Multi-User version of ContaX. How the pricing will work, Can I upgrade and what database(s) will be supported.
The licensing will be very simply a multiple of the Single User price and a one off additional fee of £100. For example, let's assume you require a 10 user license for ContaX. ContaX retails at £44. Therefore your price would be:
Additional users would be £44. Licenses are 'Mix and Match' and will work on either Mac OSX or Microsoft Windows.
ContaX Upgrade to Multi-User
To upgrade from the Single User version of ContaX requires only that you purchase the Multi-User License. The program is the same whether you are Single or Multi-User.
ContaX Multi-User Databases
The initial plan was to make the first supported Multi-User database
REAL Server from REAL Software. REAL Server is an incredibly easy to use, inexpensive and powerful database. Listening to our customers however has made us change our minds and put our development efforts towards making the first supported Multi-User database MySQL.MySQL is incredibly popular, it has a lot of loyal supporters, a lot of expertise is available and best of all it is available free of charge. We expect MySQL support to be available within the next couple of weeks.
Additional database support, including REAL Server, will follow in due course. We are developing a powerful object oriented structure that will help us support multiple databases whilst refusing to compromise on speed or features. See my separate blog post for details.

Product News ooSooM Pro Coming Soon
Thanks to our customers
ooSooM has been very successful. In only a few short months ooSooM has been registered well over 2000 times. It's great to know that so many people are using and enjoying the product.ooSooM is available Free of Charge and we make revenue from the Encryption / Decryption security features that are enabled by purchasing either an
R10Cipher or ooSooM Pro license. For those that don't want or need these features ooSooM is entirely free, with no strings attached.As a registered user you may receive an email from us every few weeks telling you about the latest offers from Arten Science, but you can unsubscribe to that very easily, and you won't hear from us again.
I think any customer of ooSooM who has been using it since version 1.0 will see that the product is now far better and more sophisticated than those early versions, your feedback has been very positive.
Products have to evolve and change to improve and ooSooM is reaching the point where the features that we would like to put in the product and the features we are being asked for by our customers, as well as our commitment to the
R10Office suite mean that the next version of ooSooM is no longer viable to be released as a free product. Developers also need to eat The current free version however will remain supported for at least the next 12 months. The next version of ooSooM will be called ooSooM Pro. Anybody with an existing ooSooM Pro license can use this license with the new product. In addition anybody with an R10Cipher license can apply for an ooSooM Pro license free of charge.
The cost of an ooSooM Pro license will increase when the new product is released, so if you are toying with the idea of upgrading to an ooSooM Pro license for ooSooM, you should do it soon while the price is still very low.
ooSooM Pro will offer a more complete, more reliable and better looking experience that the current version of ooSooM. Some of the features that we have either already completed or we have in progress or planned are:

ooSooM is a Todo Management and Secure Digital Filing System for Macintosh OSX and Microsoft Windows. It integrates directly with other Arten Science products as part of the R10Office suite.
ooSooM is still available free of charge.

Updates in Version 2.2.0
The Todo and Vault items can now be sorted by dragging and dropping the individual rows in the list. Each context has it's own sort order, so for example an item can be bottom of the list within the Urgency heading, middle of the list within the Type heading and top of the list within it's own heading category.
This functionality replaces the Priority dropdown menu from previous versions.

ooSooM is a Todo Management and Secure Digital Filing System for Macintosh OSX and Microsoft Windows. It integrates directly with other Arten Science products as part of the R10Office suite.
ooSooM is still available free of charge.
The Item Properties window has been redesigned, it is now Wide rather than High. There has been several bug fixes and user interface tweaks in 2.1.6. None of them critical. The final change is the addition of the SPECIAL section in the Vault. if you insert a Category within the Vault and precede the name with the Caret symbol ie:

ooSooM 2.0.0 Available
ooSooM is a Todo Management and Secure Digital Filing System for Macintosh OSX and Microsoft Windows.
Version 2.0.0 is a significant upgrade for ooSooM. Nothing has been added to Version 2.0.0 that has not been suggested by several of our existing customers. There are many uses for this functionality. For example you can create an entry in the Vault titled ‘Website Marketing’. You can then enter text concerning website marketing and then drag and drop supporting documents and pictures that will then be moved and stored and accessed from within ooSooM. To access this new functionality it is necessary to first go to the Preferences window (which for ease of use can now be accessed from the Toolbar as well as the Menu, another version 2.0.0 change), go to the Configuration tab and use the ‘Choose’ button to select the location for your Attachments. Once this is done you should restart ooSooM and then you can use the Attachment functionality.

Updates in Version 2.0.0
The most significant change in Version 2.0.0 is the ability to attach multiple documents, for example pdf files, jpg pictures, word documents etc. to a single Vault Item.
If you wish an entry in your Item or vault list to stand out you can now choose to Bold, Italic or Underline the entry.
NanooSooM
NanooSooM is now included as standard in the Mac OSX download. More information on NanooSooM here:

R10BatchMail has been updated to version 1.9.8
You can download it from here.
This version has had some alterations to make it more powerful and effective as a member of the R10Office suite.
As well as being able to select your contacts for the mailing from your ContaX database, you can now write the results of the mailing back to each individual contact in the ContaX database. This will be stored as part of their History.

Prior to Version 1.2.5 if you wished to take advantage of the Encryption and Decryption features of ooSooM you would need to input your R10Cipher serial number, if you had one. For those of you who don’t have one and have no intention of purchasing R10Cipher on it’s own merits, then it was perceived as an expensive way to add those useful Encryption / Decryption facilities to ooSooM.
So, catering to the many requests I have received, as of Version 1.2.5 of ooSooM you can choose to purchase an ooSooM Pro License which is available very inexpensively and once input into the Encryption tab of the ooSooM Preferences window will give you full Encryption / Decryption capabilities.
Here’s the link to the ooSooM About Page, from which the ooSooM Pro License can be purchased. Payment can be taken in GBP, USD or EUR.

Version 1.0.0 now integrates with ooSooM our Free Todo / Task Manager. Text saved by JustWrite will be saved to the ooSooM Inbox, assuming that the ooSooM database has been selected within the JustWrite Preferences window.
In version 1.0.0 the width of the Text Entry control can be changed using the Slider at the bottom of the screen.

This update of R10BatchMail features a change in the location of the R10BatchMail Support Files.
These files are now expected to be in the same folder as the R10BatchMail application.
You can input your Preferences into R10BatchMail again, or you can copy your existing files from their current location to the same folder as R10BatchMail.
The current locations of these files for both Mac OSX and Windows 7 are shown below. Other operating systems may vary. In addition the folders may have the 'hidden' attribute set in Windows.

The R10Office suite consists of four totally seperate independent programs that also integrate together seamlessly. If you purchase the R10Office suite rather than the programs individually you can use the R10Office Launcher to run the programs. This may be more convenient than creating seperate aliases or shortcuts for each program.
The launcher is not yet available, but the current development version looks like this on the Mac:

ContaX CRM Updated to Version 1.1.0
ContaX CRM, our Cross Platform Contact Relationship Management System, Version 1.1.0 has just been released. This is quite an interesting update with a great new feature. This new feature is User Definable Connections / Relationships.
User Definable Connections / Relationships allows you to setup your own descriptive relationships within the ContaX Preferences, and then connect your contacts together using these relationships. The following are examples and ideas for the kinds of relationships you could setup:

For relationships such as Trade Association, BNI Group and HOG Chapter you would obviously apply the organisation name to the description, for example: Sherwood HOG, BNI Phoenix etc.
The Mac OSX New Connections window is shown below:
Relationships are set as either Outgoing or Incoming by ContaX. From the ContaX main screen assume I have selected contact A. I select the Connections tab and press the ‘New Connection’ button. I then choose contact B and a connection type of ‘Subsidiary’. In this example the connection is set so that contact B is a subsidiary of contact A. contact A has an Outgoing relationship and contact B has an Incoming relationship. The relationship can be viewed from the perspective of either contact A or contact B and it will be shown as Outgoing or Incoming appropriately.
This new facility is ideal for exploring the relationships between your contacts, recording them, evaluating them and viewing them with a view to working your contacts whether for the purposes of generating new business, marketing to existing customers or just keeping your data up to date, complete and as accurate as possible.

Today I released my latest product: ooSooM.
ooSooM is a Todo Management and Secure Digital Filing System for Macintosh OSX and Microsoft Windows.
The idea behind ooSooM is simple. To get on with the job in hand you need to get thoughts of what needs doing and what needs remembering out of your head and safely and securely logged, in a way that means you can find them later when needed. Bits of paper are so yesterday 
ooSooM does not attempt to force a predetermined 'methodology' on you, rather it's very free format and open allowing you to use it however you like, but with enough structure to ensure that once logged, information can retrieved easily and readily.
ooSooM is Windows 7 and OSX Snow Leopard compatible.
ooSooM is supplied FREE OF CHARGE for PERSONAL USE.
One of the unique features of ooSooM is that if you have an R10Cipher license then Todo or Vault items within ooSooM can be Encrypted / Decrypted on an individual basis. This allows you to use ooSooM to store confidential information such as Passwords, Serial Numbers, Credit Card Numbers, Bank Details Etc.
Another unique feature of ooSooM is that it integrates directly with ContaX, our CRM package. This means that Todo items and Vault items can be linked to particular Customers, Suppliers or Contacts. This link can be seen both from within ooSooM and within ContaX.

R10Cipher, InfoSec Product of the Year: Finalist
I am extremely proud and honoured to be considered among such esteemed company.
Since this was officially announced I have received some great email from some of my customers, many thanks for your kind words. Here's just one I received a few days ago:
I am sure you've been inundated with emails since you sent the announcement out but I wanted to say congratulations. I always knew your apps were great, but up for awards, that is a great honor and now you get to reap the fruit of your labor. Is it just up to the folks at "BCS & computing" who make the final decision or is there room for users to help vote in this stage? If I can vote and help let me know as I will do so. Again, congratulations, I hope more users see this and realize how badly a cross platform encryption engine WAS needed. You filled a gaping hole, from email to file to text.
After all these builds r10cipher does it all and I can't see any competitor in sight as they would have to code it on a cross-platform language and the only one I can see feasible besides realbasic is java and coming from a mac only user, I hate java apps and I think most others do as well and will only use them as a last resort. If there is anyway I can vote to help the end result please let me know.
It's customers like this that make the product what it is, their feedback and encouragement makes it all worthwhile.

New Product Coming Soon: ooSooM
At the moment when it comes to organising myself, my projects and my digital ‘stuff’ I have a three tier approach:
Historical and Digital Filing is handled by YoJimbo.
Todo Items and Projects are handled by Things
Calendar Items are handled by iCal.
iCal is fine, it syncs well with my iPhone and is simple as a calendar should be. I have no complaints with iCal. YoJimbo is very good but Mac only, Things is also very good but again Mac only. I occasionally work on my Windows Netbook so ideally I would like cross platform functionality in these programs. I also find they have way too many features that I don’t use that sometimes distract me.
The idea behind R10Vault has been dug up, modified and a new program is emerging. ooSooM (Out of Sight. Out of Mind). ooSooM will feature the functionlity of R10Vault which will then replace YoJimbo, and it will also feature the best functionality from Things.
Therefore, for organising myself I will have iCal for dated items and ooSooM for everything else, both historical (filed) and current / future Todo and Project items.
My initial mockup of the interface can be seen in the picture below:
I’m making a real effort to keep ooSooM simple and clean, both in use via the interface and also in functionality. At the moment I have no plans for the release date or even a full specification, it will be ready when it’s ready. It will also probably be released as Freeware, although I reserve the right to charge for it in the future should I decide to.

Zero Effort Corporate Licensing
Zero Effort Corporate Licensing enables each desktop to be easily licensed without requiring any typing or copy / pasting from the user.
From the R10Cipher Manual:
R10Cipher features the ability to license the program for the user just by deploying a file to them, maybe via email, which they they drag into their R10Cipher folder. If R10Cipher is currently running as a Trial Version the file will be read next time the program is started and the program automatically licensed.

The RB Starter Kit executable demonstrates and documents a module of predefined functions that will mainly be of use to new and intermediate REALbasic Developers.
The RB Starter Kit contains an executable for Macintosh and Windows.

The Syntax Highlighter Module operates against any EditField in your REALbasic Application. As you type, your words are matched against a text file containing keywords, words that you wish to have highlighted in some way on your EditField, an example would be a SQL Query or a Language Editor.
Whatever you type in the EditField is highlighted if contained within your Keywords File. This text file can be easily created and then edited to include or exclude additional keywords.
The Syntax Highlighter is supplied as an Encrypted RB Module which you include in your own applications.

Surveillance for Your Mac
Version 1.1.0 of MonitorMyMac introduces the capability for MMM to create HTML files which contain a link to the latest captured images.
Two files are created (assuming you have set the Preferences to capture both Screen and Webcam), the files are named:
mmm_latest_webcam.html
and
mmm_latest_screenshot.html
These files are created and stored locally with your images as well as being automatically uploaded to your FTP site (if you are using the FTP capability).
In practical terms what this gives you is the capability to bookmark these files and view the latest webcam or screen captures from iPhone, Windows Mobile Device, Netbook, Browser or any other device that can display webpages and has access to your FTP site over the internet.
This is much easier and quicker than manually looking at the directory listings to establish the latest images. Although you can of course still do this should you wish to.

What is it ?
R10BatchMail is a simple to use Bulk Email Sending program for Macintosh OSX.

Syntax Highlighter Module Released for REALbasic Developers
Download the Example Application to test the Syntax Highlighter with the supplied SQL Keywords file or alternatively your own Keywords file.
The Syntax Highlighter Module operates against any EditField in your REALbasic Application. As you type, your words are matched against a text file containing keywords, words that you wish to have highlighted in some way on your EditField, an example would be a SQL Query or a Language Editor.

The Syntax Highlighter is supplied as an Encrypted RB Module which you include in your own applications. There are no royalty fees involved.
The encrypted module and the unencrypted example application will be sent to you via email following purchase via Paypal from our website at http://www.rbtools.net. This encrypted module can be used in any of your projects without limitation or credit.
To use the Module within your own application, follow these simple instructions:
1. Create your text file of Keywords
2. Load the Keywords file (possibly at program startup) with the following code:
mSyntaxControl.LoadKeywordsFromFile(FILENAME)
3. Place the following code in the EditField TextChange Event:
mSyntaxControl.ChangeText(me,True,True,True,&c0000FF)
The Parameters are: (EditField, Capitals as Boolean, Bold as Boolean, Colour as Boolean, Colour Value)
Words within single or double quotes are not affected and neither are words that are part of another word.

Updates to this module will be made over time as feedback comes in and as it is used in one of my own products I will no doubt be adding enhancements over the next few weeks / months.

‘R10Clean goes from strength to strength.
If you are engaged in audit or preliminary research of medical, biological, psychological, social, nursing or paramedical data, especially with yes, no, may-be type responses (and other types of nominal data), do yourself a favour and try this software.
It is simple but very powerful.
Before your tear your hair out on excel, SPSS and the like, you may find that the analysis is much easier after using R10Clean.
The developer is very resonsive to user feedback.
The recent addition of count occurrances can eliminate at one stroke the need to struggle with VCount and CountIF (or similar) in Excel or to have to do this manually.’

This version has the following enhancements:
Progress Bar and Counter X of XXX when checking for duplicates.
The duplicate finding code is now multi threaded to allow the UI to function and update during these processes.
I intend to make each of the ‘tasks’ multi threaded with appropriate counters and progress bar before release of Version 2. The finding of duplicates works well - but is currently relatively slow when dealing with tens of thousands of rows. I will be looking at this also before the release of Version 2.
Version 2 will have an increase in price. Some of the new features I have in mind (and have not yet discussed publicly) push the product more towards a corporate purchase which means the price has to be increased in order to appear as a creditable product. This has the effect of increasing my revenue and also helping fund further development of the product. However all licensed users of Version 1 will get a free upgrade to Version 2 when it is released in a couple of weeks or so.
I will also be creating a new website for R10Clean, the domain name is setup and ready to roll

The only change in this version is the addition of ‘Zero Effort Corporate Licensing’. Effectively this allows you to create a text file with your license details embedded and distribute this around your corporation with the application. Encrypting and Decrypting Files with R10Cipher
Encrypting Files and Documents
Double Click R10Cipher to launch the software. You will see the R10Cipher main screen. The Windows XP Version is shown below with the Drag and Drop Encryption Area highlighted:
Enter your Shared Secret (this is your encryption key) into the area at the bottom left of the screen. This can be between 4 and 16 characters. For example: yuetrtytpl*565r0.
Drag one of more files into the Drag and Drop Encryption Area (highlighted above). Press the Batch button to the right of the list of files.
The encrypted files will be saved to your desktop with the same filenames as the originals but with the file extension .r10Enc.
Decrypting Files and Documents
Double Click the encrypted file, following the double click you see this window:
All you have to do is enter the Shared Secret and the file will be decrypted and saved on your Desktop with the same name as the original, pre-encrypted file.
NOTE: Before you use this feature for the first time you may need to associate the R10Enc files with the R10Cipher Software. How you do this depends on your Operating System. We have instructions in the Manual Addendum for Mac OSX and Windows XP.

Encrypting Email Communications
Double Click R10Cipher to launch the software. You will see the R10Cipher main screen. The Mac OSX Version is shown below:
Enter your Shared Secret (this is your encryption key) into the area at the bottom left of the screen. This can be between 4 and 16 characters. For example: yuetrtytpl*565r0.
Enter the message or text you wish to encrypt into the Clear Text area. You can right click and Paste the text, or use Drag and Drop if you wish.
Select the Encrypt option from the toolbar.
Click the Email button and an email will be opened for you with the encrypted text as the message. Send the email.
Decrypting Email Communications
Drag the Encrypted text from the email into the Cipher Text area. Enter the Shared Secret and Select the Decrypt button on the toolbar to view the Decrypted contents.

R10Cipher is not free, the price however is designed to be attractive given the advantages of R10Cipher over the alternatives. It has to be said that using some sort of encryption when passing sensitive information is now necessary and essential.
Initially this document was going to cover several alternatives, when it comes to Cross Platform alternatives however there is not a lot of choice and the only one of note is TrueCrypt.
By ‘Cross Platform’ what I mean is software that can be used on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Mac OSX and Linux. If you wish to communicate securely then you need a solution that will run on your operating system as well as the operating system used by your clients, you have no control over what their choice of operating system is.
TrueCrypt http://www.truecrypt.org
TrueCrypt is designed to create an encrypted ‘volume’ that can then be accessed from either your Windows or Macintosh computer, using the appropriate password, assuming you have TrueCrypt installed. As a method of creating and maintaining an encrypted volume of information TrueCrypt is excellent. It is however designed for an entirely different purpose to R10Cipher.
Think of the hard disk on your computer. Imagine another hard disk into which you can store information which is then automatically encrypted. Imagine being able to drag that hard disk onto a USB key and take it with you and load it onto another computer. That is effectively what TrueCrypt does.
Compare this to R10Cipher. R10Cipher allows you to encrypt and decrypt the contents of an email or text document. R10Cipher allows you to encrypt a single file that can then be sent over email or copied around the network. A very different proposition to TrueCrypt.
It’s also worth looking at ease of use. R10Cipher requires no installation. TrueCrypt needs a lengthy installation and setup. Who is going to support your clients through this installation ? If in doubt it is worth doing the exercise and seeing for yourself. As a solution to use between yourself and external clients, TrueCrypt cannot be recommended. It is just not designed for that purpose.
Of course as the author and designer of R10Cipher I am biased. Therefore I recommend you try both R10Cipher and TrueCrypt. R10Cipher can be downloaded for a free trial from this address:

ArtenSUITE Customer Mapping
There are some annoying restrictions with the Google API unfortunately and with ArtenSUITE being cross platform I also had to contend with working with both WebKit and Internet Explorer calls but in the end the result was worthwhile as the customer appears to be pleased

R10Cipher Cross Platform Encryption New Beta 1.9.7 Available

This is probably the final beta before we release the product, subject to no showstoppers being found !
1.9.7 includes the ability to encrypt multiple files by dragging and dropping them on the ‘Encryption Area’. To process them press the ‘Batch’ button. To remove a file that has been accidentally included, double click the filename.

Double Click to Decrypt
R10Cipher Version 2 attempts to make working with encrypted files as simple as possible. Therefore any encrypted file can be decrypted just by double clicking the encrypted file.
Following the double click you see this window:
All you have to do is enter Shared Secret and the file will be decrypted and saved on your Desktop with the same name as the original, pre-encrypted file.
NOTE: Before you use this feature for the first time you may need to associate the R10Enc files with the R10Cipher Software.
Zero Effort Corporate Licensing
Another new feature in Version 2 is the ability to license the program for the user just by deploying a file to them, maybe via email, which they they drag into their R10Cipher folder. If R10Cipher is currently running as a Trial Version the file will be read and the program automatically licensed.
The file can then be deleted.
The file must be named as follows:
R10Cipher_License.ini
and the contents must be in plain text format and read as follows:
In a multi desktop environment Zero Effort Licensing saves time and effort and provides a painless way to license your Arten Science product.

R10Cipher V2 Open Beta - Cross Platform Encryption for Text and Files

The main change in Version 2 is the ability to Encrypt a binary file, or virtually any type of file.
Version 1 concentrated on encrypting and decrypting text documents. With Version 2 you can input a Word or Excel Document which will then be encrypted and saved under the same name with an ‘r10Enc’ file extension.
When the document is decrypted it is written to disk using its original name, and is available to be viewed and manipulated in the normal manner.
When you realise that most passworded documents can be viewed very easily (including Excel) with tools downloaded from the internet then you can see that R10Cipher V2 is an essential utility to add to your software collection.
Version 2 will be priced higher than Version 1. Any customer of Version 1 will be able to upgrade to Version 2 by paying the difference in price.
The Beta for this version expires at the end of January. Beta testers who provide useful feedback will be entitle to purchase a personal license of R10Cipher at 50% off the retail price.
Other changes to Version 2 include a ‘Feedback list’ in the bottom right of the window, and Menu options are now provided to duplicate the functionality of the Toolbar buttons.

Sicuro Delayed - Happy Holidays Etc.
Well it's that time of year again. I've just got back from setting up the Spanish offices for a customer of mine: Tailored Marine Supplies.
Much as I enjoyed the work, the climate, Sotogrande, the company and especially the last meal at the Argentinean restaurant - this has unfortunately meant that work on Sicuro has been parked for the last couple of weeks, hence this product is now scheduled to be released in January.
I'd like to wish happy holidays to all my customers, friends and everyone really. I'm not going to be working over Christmas although I will be answering emails.
