The latest Beta (1.9.6) of Version 2 of R10Cipher can be downloaded from here:

http://www.artenscience.com/autoupdate/latestversions/r10cipherv2_beta.zip

Double Click to Decrypt

R10Cipher Version 2 attempts to make working with encrypted files as simple as possible. Therefore any encrypted file can be decrypted just by double clicking the encrypted file.

Following the double click you see this window:

R10Cipher Image
All you have to do is enter Shared Secret and the file will be decrypted and saved on your Desktop with the same name as the original, pre-encrypted file.

NOTE: Before you use this feature for the first time you may need to associate the R10Enc files with the R10Cipher Software.

Zero Effort Corporate Licensing

Another new feature in Version 2 is the ability to license the program for the user just by deploying a file to them, maybe via email, which they they drag into their R10Cipher folder. If R10Cipher is currently running as a Trial Version the file will be read and the program automatically licensed.

The file can then be deleted.

The file must be named as follows:

R10Cipher_License.ini

and the contents must be in plain text format and read as follows:

blogpictext

In a multi desktop environment Zero Effort Licensing saves time and effort and provides a painless way to license your Arten Science product.

Arten Science Website Search

I’ve made some enhancements to the Arten Science website recently including a Search facility. This Search facility will search artenscience.co.uk, artenscience.com and tektalkin.co.uk and present the results grouped by website. To activate the Search you can either select Search from the Menu Button:

Search Menu Button

or input your search term directly into the search input box located in the sidebar of the home page:

search2

You will then see the Arten Science Search page, complete with the results (if you entered via the input box). The Search page looks like this:

search3

Note that you can collapse and expand the results for each site individually as well as specify the amount of entries to show using the boxes as shown below:

search4

I’m pleased with this upgrade to the site and hope it provides a benefit.

Arten Science on Windows 7 Beta

I have been testing all the Arten Science commercial products on Windows 7 Beta today. I am pleased to say they all run without a hitch, if anything they seem ‘slicker’ on Windows 7 than Vista, despite Windows 7 being a Beta.

Windows 7 Beta can be downloaded here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx

Creating SQL Update Statements for Bulk Imports using DataClean

DataClean can be useful for many types of data manipulation. Recently I have been working with an ArtenSUITE customer who was supplying large quantities of data as an Excel spreadsheet to be imported into ArtenSUITE.

A simplified version of the spreadsheet looks like this:

Spreadsheet Image

Traditionally to import this type of data I would have created a small screen to import the data via a loop, or maybe I would have used a database utility and mapped the columns. This time I used dataclean to convert this information into a long series of SQL Update statements which where then simply run as a script.

The procedure I was followed was this:

  • Open the spreadsheet using DataClean
  • Select Column A, Select all the Rows
  • Perform an Insert / Beginning of Column
  • Type: update countries_table set shipcost =
  • Select Column B
  • Perform an Insert / Beginning of Column
  • Type: , set max_wgt =
  • ....... (Each Column)
  • Select Column G
  • Perform an Insert / Beginning of Column
  • Type: WHERE country_code = ‘
  • Perform an Insert / End of Column
  • Type: ‘ ;
  • Save the Document using a Space Character as the Custom Delimiter
  • Run the Document as a SQL Script
It may look complicated but all you are doing is surrounding the columns with the SQL necessary to make each line a valid SQL Update statement. You end up with a text file full of statements like this:

update bas_cho_ccry set cry_1stvalue = 600 , cry_2ndvalue = 950 , cry_freevalue = 1300 where cry_code = 'AL' and cry_comp_fk_com = 61;

Very quick to do and very efficient. I love it Happy

R10Cipher V2 Open Beta - Cross Platform Encryption for Text and Files

The Beta of Version 2 of R10Cipher can be downloaded from here:

http://www.artenscience.com/autoupdate/latestversions/r10cipherv2_beta.zip

The main change in Version 2 is the ability to Encrypt a binary file, or virtually any type of file.

Version 1 concentrated on encrypting and decrypting text documents. With Version 2 you can input a Word or Excel Document which will then be encrypted and saved under the same name with an ‘r10Enc’ file extension.

When the document is decrypted it is written to disk using its original name, and is available to be viewed and manipulated in the normal manner.

When you realise that most passworded documents can be viewed very easily (including Excel) with tools downloaded from the internet then you can see that R10Cipher V2 is an essential utility to add to your software collection.

Version 2 will be priced higher than Version 1. Any customer of Version 1 will be able to upgrade to Version 2 by paying the difference in price.

The Beta for this version expires at the end of January. Beta testers who provide useful feedback will be entitle to purchase a personal license of R10Cipher at 50% off the retail price.

R10Cipher Image

Other changes to Version 2 include a ‘Feedback list’ in the bottom right of the window, and Menu options are now provided to duplicate the functionality of the Toolbar buttons.

Thanks to Jonathan Duke of DukeDesktop for reminding me that I should get this version done Happy

Wrong macVCR Versions on MacWorld DVD ?

It seems that some of the DVD’s supplied with the February 2009 version of MacWorld magazine do not contain the free version of macVCR, Version 1.2. You can check for this from the About window. The About window for the correct version will look like this:

macvcr12about

If your About window is different then you do not have the correct version. I apologise for this, but it is entirely out of my control. You can obtain the correct version from here:

Arten Science Google Adwords Experiment

We’ve started experimenting with Google Adwords for the new year. We’ve started off with six adverts in a single campaign with a £100 per month budget. This should be enough to produce some actual data and see whether the keywords I have used have generated any clicks through to my site. The six adverts are shown below:

adwords_macvcr1

adwords_dataclean1

adwords_artenquery1

adwords_r10cipher1

adwords_screenaudit1

adwords_smsrelay1

I’ll update this blog and let people know whether the Adwords campaign is successful or not.

Using Paypal on the Arten Science Website

As I mentioned in an earlier post we have now switched to using Paypal on our website. This entry explains the process. We’ll look at the scenario whereby you wish to purchase a corporate site license for R10Cipher.

The R10Cipher webpage as with all our product webpages features a side bar down the right hand side of the page. The sidebar for R10Cipher looks like this:

R10Cipher Sidebar

To buy the corporate edition you need to press the ‘Buy Now’ button below the ‘£100 GBP Corporate’ text. You will then be presented with a Paypal webpage similar to this:

Paypal Page Image

If you have a Paypal account you need only to login. If you do not have a Paypal account you can still pay through this screen using the Guest Checkout on the left of the page. At no stage are any of your financial details seen or stored by Arten Science. Your interaction here is with Paypal.

Note: Your software will be licensed to the name of the individual who holds the Paypal account unless you specifically change this during the Paypal payment process. There is an option to specify the name of the software licensee.

At this stage you can continue and confirm the amount and make the payment or you can return to Arten Science using the link on the lower left of the page. If you choose to return to Arten Science from here or if a problem occurs you will be shown the page below:

problempage

This page gives you the opportunity to report the problem to us using the link available. If however you complete the payment successfully you will see the following page instead:

thankspage

This page gives us the chance to thank you for your patronage and give you advise on when and how you will receive your software license. If you have any questions at this stage you can contact us via the support link shown. Assuming you have seen the page above your Inbox will soon be receiving your receipt. Your receipt comes from Paypal and will look similar to this:

Note: This is a receipt for Pointer+ *not* R10Cipher Corporate.

customerspaypalreceipt

Arten Science will at this stage receive notification of payment which is what triggers the email to you with your license details.

Buying from Arten Science using Paypal is quick, simple and risk free. In addition we offer our 30 day money back guarantee.

Eating My Own Dogfood, Using R10Cipher

I use Mac computers almost exclusively. For testing purposes I use VMWare Fusion and I have a number of Virtual Machines setup for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 2003 Server and Ubuntu Linux.

To store passwords, serial numbers, code snippets etc. I use YoJimbo from Bare Bones Software. This is then syncronised to my other Mac’s via Mobile Me. So far so good. YoJimbo however does have some limitations, single user, no choice of backend database storage, no Windows version etc. All of these limitations will be overcome with my product Sicuro, which if customers wanting bespoke solutions will leave me alone for a bit (just kidding! I love all my customers Happy ) will be available in the first quarter this year.

With the need to travel to Europe and my aversion to carrying any more than will fit in hand luggage, and also the fact that I sometimes visit customers on my motorcycle, I have needed a small and light laptop. Apple does not do a netbook unfortunately and the MacBook Air is still to big so I have recently obtained a Dell Mini 9. Which runs Windows XP. Which means that all my serial numbers, passwords, website logons etc. are not available to me when I travel.

This is where R10Cipher is really useful.

ico_r10cipher

To start with I highlight all the items I want from YoJimbo and use the Export option. The problem here is that YoJimbo exports a new file for every entry, and I need just the one file. To address this I open the Terminal application and navigate to the directory containing my exported password files. I then type the following command:

cat * > newfilename.txt

Voila ! I now have a single file that contains all of my exported passwords in plain text.

I then launch R10Cipher and drag the contents of my text file into the ‘Clear Text’ area of R10Cipher. I type a ‘Shared Secret’ and click the Encrypt button. My passwords are now encrypted, protected by the key, or ‘Shared Secret’ that I just entered.

All that remains is for me to copy the encrypted file onto my Windows netbook and when I need the passwords I can use the Windows version of R10Cipher to open and Decrypt the file which allows me to view the contents. If I lose my netbook or it gets stolen - so what. At least my data is safe.

Note to UK Government agencies: YOU NEED R10CIPHER Happy

New Arten Science Website

It was time to refresh my tired looking website with something a bit cleaner and more modern.

I’ve also taken this opportunity to add Paypal as my primary payment method. Not only is it slicker, cleaner and faster but it works out slightly less expensive for me to process funds. We’ll see how it goes Happy
